Objective
The final project for
this course is to create a blog and post a variety of multimedia into it over
the final weeks of semester. The day of your final you will give a presentation
of your blog project in class using Prezi.
In the beginning
weeks of this class, we learned about the paradigm shift from old media to new
media. One thing that we specifically discussed was the democratization of
media and how it has become much easier to create and disseminate information
over the internet in the last decade. User generated content is what dominates
the web and it’s your time to participate.
Grading
This project is worth
15% of your course grade and will be the difference between letter grades. This
project will be graded on the completeness of the overall project and the
ability to meet deadlines will be a factor in your overall grade. In other
words, not making due dates this month will significantly affect your project
and grade. We will be spending much of the remaining time in the classroom
building up our projects.
In Class Work
You are expected to
show up to class to complete your assignments and must notify your professor
prior to missing a session. Each class meeting you will have a specific task to
complete to ensure that your final project is coming along and will be complete
by the end of semester. In class your time should be utilized by asking
questions, working on design, and use of the Adobe CS6 Master collection for
the multimedia aspects of your blog. Bring headphones if you are going to edit
video or audio during class hours.
Out of Class Work
Outside of class you
will be expected to complete planning and development for your blog. You will
be expected to meet the milestone post dates to keep me updated on your
progress. You are the manager of this blog, so make sure you keep it
interesting. Adding extra posts is highly encouraged.
Scenario
You have been
selected as the lead multimedia designer and social media consultant for a new
web based start up. You have decided to use a blog as the communication vehicle
for your client. You will produce a variety of multimedia projects and post
them to your blog over the next few weeks. There is a lot of work to do and it
will be important to stay on task.
Topic
You will create a
blog about a product, service, or idea, or business prospect for something of
your choice. If you have difficulty providing a topic, one will be assigned to
you. Your entire blog will revolve around this choice and should be something
that you like. <Must be approved by instructor>
For example, you might like women’s
fashion and would like to write your thoughts about a new style you developed
or how you can get it for cheaper using online retailers. You use the blog to
show off some of your designs and ideas giving peers the chance to comment.
Another example might be that you are into new smart phones. You could review
Android phones made by Motorola and feature in-depth looks at various models.
Yet another example might be a blog created to promote a cause or belief.
Someone might want to support a political cause or position. They could provide
information, graphics, and videos in the blog that conveyed that message.
Project Details
Planning
Your first task is to acquire a Google
account, start a Blogger, and begin planning the theme and design for your
blog. A Google account is handy to have because it offers a large variety of
helpful tools for the production of new media. In this project you will use
Blogger as the new media platform to promote your startup. You will also use
YouTube to host your video for embedding into your blog.
Client
The client you make up or choose will
be offering a product, service, or idea. You can take this opportunity to blog
about something that you have a passion for or you can make up a fictional
scenario. Regardless, you will be graded on how well you run your blog.
Design
Remember the principles of design. To
reference the principles, look at pages 999 in your textbook. Things to think
about are the overall color theme and font choices. These elements will be
crucial for your branding. Once you decide on the right colors, use the Planning Form to keep track of your
design details for reference. Download and save your font so that it can be
used on various computers if you are not using the same computer for all your
design work.
Posting
This is a blog, so you are going to
have to post a few times to get timely information out. Posts will be made
every Wednesday for the rest of the semester. Use
Due Dates
There will be milestone due dates throughout
November to ensure you are on track in creating and maintaining your blog. The
aggregate of all these assignments will become your final project. This project
will conclude with a presentation during finals week.
Video Project
The blog will feature a video project
that is 1 - 5 minutes. It can be a slideshow
Final Presentation
Your final
presentation must be created in a Prezi so that the Prezi can be easily
embedded in your blog. The Prezi presentation should last 3 – 5 minutes and
given in class.
Your
Presentation should follow this format:
1.
The logo of your blog
2.
The basic overview of your product, service, or
idea
3.
The
reasons as to why you chose the design colors and fonts
4.
Include
a few sketches or ideas you came up during the planning stage
5.
Give
information about the target audience (market) that you designed for and why
6.
Explain
what multimedia applications you used for your design and why
7.
Show your video
